[263]
tatra kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhikkhū āmantesi — “āvuso, bhikkhave”ti. “āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa paccassosuṃ.

2) Ở đấy, Tôn giả Mahā Moggallāna gọi các Tỷ-kheo:

-- Này chư Hiền Tỷ-kheo.

-- Thưa Hiền giả.

Các Tỷ-kheo ấy vâng đáp Tôn giả Mahā Moggallāna.

2) There the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna addressed the bhikkhus thus:

— “Friends, bhikkhus!” (276)

— “Friend!” those bhikkhus replied.

3) The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said this:

— “Here, friends, while I was alone in seclusion, a reflection arose in my mind thus: ‘It is said, “the first jhāna, the first jhāna.” What now is the first jhāna?’

tassa mayhaṃ, āvuso, etadahosi — ‘idha bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. idaṃ vuccati paṭhamaṃ jhānan’ti. 4) -- Này chư Hiền, tôi suy nghĩ như sau: "Ở đây, Tỷ-kheo ly dục, ly bất thiện pháp, chứng và trú Thiền thứ nhất, một trạng thái hỷ lạc do ly dục sanh, có tầm có tứ. Ðây gọi là Thiền thứ nhất. 4) — “Then, friends, it occurred to me: ‘Here, secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture and happiness born of seclusion. This is called the first jhāna.’
so khvāhaṃ, āvuso, vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. tassa mayhaṃ, āvuso, iminā vihārena viharato kāmasahagatā saññāmanasikārā samudācaranti. 5) Rồi này chư Hiền, tôi ly dục, ly bất thiện pháp, chứng và trú Thiền thứ nhất một trạng thái hỷ lạc do ly dục sanh, có tầm có tứ. Này chư Hiền, do tôi trú với an trú này, các tưởng câu hữu với dục (kāma) được tác ý và hiện hành (samudācaranti). 5) “Then, friends, secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, I entered and dwelt in the first jhāna…. While I dwelt therein perception and attention accompanied by sensuality assailed me. (277)
Hãy nhứt tâm vào Thiền thứ nhất". 6) “Then, friends, the Blessed One came to me by means of spiritual power and said this: ‘Moggallāna, Moggallāna, do not be negligent, brahmin, regarding the first jhāna. Steady your mind in the first jhāna, unify your mind in the first jhāna, concentrate your mind in the first jhāna.’
so khvāhaṃ, āvuso, aparena samayena vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja vihāsiṃ. 7) Rồi này chư Hiền, trong một thời gian khác, tôi chứng và trú Thiền thứ nhất, một trạng thái hỷ lạc do ly dục sanh, có tầm có tứ. 7) Then, friends, on a later occasion, secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, I entered and dwelt in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture and happiness born of seclusion.

(276) The first nine suttas of this saṃyutta report Moggallāna’s experiences during his week-long struggle for arahantship immediately after his ordination as a bhikkhu. For another account of his development, see AN IV 85–88, and for a connected narrative, see Hecker, “Mahāmoggallāna: Master of Psychic Powers,” in Nyanaponika and Hecker, Great Disciples of the Buddha, pp. 78–83.

(277) Kāmasahagatā saññā manasikārā samudācaranti. Spk glosses: accompanied by the five hindrances.

(278) Mahābhiññataṃ patto. Moggallāna excelled in the supernormal powers (iddhividha); see 51:14, 51:31.

(279) Cp. 21:1, where the same experience is discussed in terms of “noble silence” (ariya tuṇhībhāva), a technical code term for the second jhāna.

(280) Animitta cetosamādhi. Spk: This refers to insight concentration (vipassanāsamādhi), which occurs when one has abandoned the sign of permanence, etc.

The “signless concentration of mind” is not defined further in the Nikāyas, but its placement after the eighth formless attainment suggests it is a samādhi qualitatively different from those attained in samatha meditation. Below, it occurs in the explanation of the “signless liberation of mind” (animittā cetovimutti, at 41:7; IV 297,3–6). At 43:4, the signless concentration (animitta samādhi) is called the path leading to the unconditioned. For a wide-ranging overview of the signless meditation, see Harvey, “Signless Meditation in Pāli Buddhism.” See too below nn. 312, 368.

(281) Nimittānusāri viññāṇaṃ hoti. Spk: This occurred while his insight knowledge was flowing along sharply and strongly as he dwelt in insight concentration. Just as, when a man is cutting down a tree with a sharp axe, if he constantly inspects the blade he doesn’t accomplish the function of cutting down the tree, so the elder developed a liking (nikanti) for insight and thus did not accomplish its function.

(282) Reading with Be and Se asītiyā devatāsahassehi saddhiṃ, as
against Ee asītiyā devatāsatehi saddhiṃ, “eighty hundred.”

(283) Buddhe aveccappasāda. This is the faith of a noble disciple at the minimal level of stream-enterer; see II, n. 120. The four qualities to be extolled here are called the four factors of stream-entry (sotāpattiyaṅga); see 12:41. Sakka is shown attaining stream-entry at DN II 288,20–23.

(284) The above suttas are abridged in all three eds. Candana is at 2:5; the other devas are the reigning deities of the four sense-sphere heavens above Tāvatiṃsa.
